Help Information

1) Logging On
When typing your password you must remember that it is case-sensitive. This means there is a difference between an uppercase and lowercase version of the same letter. For example, the word 'Fred' is not the same as the word 'fred'.

  Forgotten Password
If you have forgotten your password, you can retrieve it by using the 'forgotten password' link. This can be found at the top left of every page when you are not logged in. Clicking this link will take you to a page which asks you for your login name. Type your login name into the box and your password will be automatically emailed to the email address that you have linked to your account.

As email is insecure, it is recommended that you log in and change your password as soon as possible after using this facility.

2) User Profile
You can change your user profile by selecting the user profile option on the menu from on the left hand side of the screen. It is important that you keep this information current, as this is the information that is displayed when people find your items.

You may change your password by using the change password option on the menu on the left hand side of the screen.

3) News
From time to time news items will be posted to the website. These will include important announcements about the website, such as new features, and other items of interest. Current news item subjects are displayed at the bottom of the menu on the left hand side of the screen. Click on the subject to see further details. Older new items can be accessed from the news archive.

Please keep an eye on these news items, as they will, on occasion, be very important.

4) Item Short List
Your item short list is the list of items that you have selected as being of interest to you. It is accessed from the menu on the left hand side of the screen. Clicking on the descriptions of the items in this list displays the full details of the item, including the seller’s details (if you are entitled to see them). The short list can be cleared from this screen or from the advanced stock search before starting a new search. Individual items can be removed from your short list by clicking the ‘remove’ button.

Item short lists are stored using cookies. Consequently if you use more than one computer to access Webshelf you will find different short lists on each computer. You will also lose your short list if you delete your cookies.

5) Advanced Search
There are two ways of searching for the product you require – the search box, which is always on the left hand side of the screen, and the advanced stock search, which is accessed from the menu on the left hand side of the screen.

The search box is simply a quick way of doing an 'All Words' search (see below) without needing to select any other options.

The advanced stock search contains many more facilities that allow a more precise search. First of which, is the way the search looks at the words you have typed into the product code/description.

  All Words
Selecting 'All Words' from the pull down box produces a case-insensitive substring search that returns results that have every word in either the product code or description. For example, if you entered white conduit in the search box. The search would show all items with both the words ‘white’ and ‘conduit’ somewhere in their codes or descriptions. So it would include white conduit, white three inch conduit, and conduit – white.

  Any Word
An ‘Any Word’ search is identical to 'All Words' except that it would show all items that have either of these words in their codes or descriptions. So as well as the results returned with an all words search it would return white socket and red conduit.
[Back To Index]
  Exact Phrase
The ‘Exact Phrase’ search, as it suggests, only returns items where the exact phrase that you have typed is found. So, using the 'All Words' example, it would exclude white three inch conduit and conduit – white.

  Search Tips
It is recommended that you start with a wide search and then narrow it down by selecting other search criteria to filter out unwanted results. If your search does not yield any results then widen your search criteria and try to think about ways in which someone else would have entered the details – perhaps a different description or included it in a different product category.

The results of the search are displayed with some basic details of each item found. To see more details, including the details of the seller (if you are entitled to see it), click on the product description.

6) Sell Items
The sell items page, accessed from the menu on the left hand side of the screen, is where you enter the details of the items that you wish to sell. It is important that you enter these details accurately. If they are inaccurate, potential customers are unlikely to find the product when searching. When deciding what you should put in the description, try to think of what potential buyers might search for to find it.

If you reach your maximum number of items for sale you must either upgrade your Webshelf membership to allow a greater number to be entered or delete an item that is already there, before entering a new one.

When you have sold an item, please remember to remove it from your list of items for sale. Nobody wants to make or receive calls about products that are no longer available.
